Baseball Faceoff
A deeper look at fantasy baseball strategy
About Baseball Faceoff
There are plenty of fantasy baseball writers out there. Some are good for lists of useful information – Who could be the next closer on this team, how do you rank all the second basemen, etc? Some are concerned with ranking all the prospects in the minors and some want to point out the underrated starting pitchers. And some want to entertain you – the columnists don’t include anything an intelligent fan couldn’t figure out, but present their views in a diverting way. Here at Baseball Faceoff we’re interested in strategies, lists with a twist, and a growing readership, not necessarily in that order. We want to be informative, thought-provoking, and maybe a bit meta-, when the situation allows. If we can bring those things to our fantasy baseball discussions, we’ll consider that, to paraphrase Jim Valvano, a full day. And if we can make you cry by reading a column, we’ll retire, or maybe write a book. We’re going to try really hard not to take this too seriously, but to be dedicated to it.

That doesn’t seem particularly detailed, I recognize. The point is that Joe and I want to be the place that fantasy baseball players go when they want to explore how to think about playing the game. Rather than providing rankings per se, we provide a framework so that you can make your own rankings better. Don’t read us to find out who the number one first baseman is – read us to help you determine how to assemble an excellent team in your draft or auction. There are lots of people who play fantasy baseball as if every league is the same. That’s just not right, and will not be endorsed by Joe and Chris.

Read us to be entertained, learn a little bit about fantasy baseball, and to laugh at the two clueless clowns putting all their insight out there for their competitors to read. We plan to focus on strategies you can employ to become a more successful fantasy owner/GM/player. Our signature column (if no one likes it, we'll have to rename the site) will be our Face-offs. Joe or I will propose a question, answer it, and request the opinion of the other. We are going to agree sometimes, and will answer with our actual view, not give you some sort of forced vitriol that makes readers question our sincerity like what you might see on a nightly sports highlights show. We are sincere people, and want to put some stuff out there on the electrons and silicon and see what happens. Hope you like it. Come back to read more – we post at least 3 new columns a week, and post something new every weekday.

We’ll discuss strategy for rotisserie and head-to-head leagues, big and small leagues, leagues with deep minors rosters, keeper leagues, and any other kind of league I’m not thinking of right now. Try to keep it interesting, but occasionally allow ourselves to really geek out and even do some statistical analysis. I’ll draw the line at calculus, but Joe is an engineer, and I make no promises for him.
